A Childhood in Imperial Doma
She was born Bakuro no Ume to Bakuro no Unzan and Bakuro no Hazakura, a family of strong traditions and few means in the year 1568 of the Sixth Astral Era (1568 6AE). They had not known what to name her at first, for her father had wanted a third son. His first words upon seeing her were, "Throw it in the river." Her mother named her Ume because she had to be spanked eight times to get her to breathe, and during that time her face had turned bright purple—like a plum, she'd said. "Ume. My little miracle plum."Although the Seventh Umbral Calamity had wreaked nowhere near the havoc that the others had caused in regions far from Eorzea—due in large part to the heroic work of a Warrior of Light, his band of adventurers, the Circle of Knowing, and the Path of the Twelve. In Doma, aetherial disturbances disrupted linkshell usage and aetherial travel for only a few months. Still, during that time the rumors of civil war were brewing in Garlemald, and its soldiers seemed very interested in returning home. This seemed like an opening, and indeed it was. When Ume was only nine years old, the War of Succession broke out in the Garlean Empire, and many of its citizens returned to the capital to take sides in the conflict. Lord Kaien Rijin led the Doman Liberation Front against the remaining Garlean forces and took back Doma Castle, but the victory did not last long. The War of Succession ended quickly, largely thanks to the cruelty of its new hero, the crown prince Zenos yae Galvus. As soon as the war was won at home, the new Emperor Varis zos Galvus ordered his son to lead the XIIth Imperial Legion into Doma and retake it from the rebels. Zenos destroyed the rebellion swiftly and executed Lord Kaien, ending all hope of Doman freedom. Those who could, fled the country for other lands.Ume and her family could not, they stayed in their homes, and they submitted to a stricter, more retaliatory Garlean occupation under the resentful rule of acting-viceroy Yotsuyu goe Brutus. The magistrate that oversaw the lands of the Bakuro family was a praefectus named Nigel fae Chaixius. Due to a prior snubbing by villagers prior to the rebellion and execution of Lord Kaien, when Nigel was reinstated, he ordered that every family and farm in his district pay him a tax above and beyond what was already owed to the Empire. The farmers struggled, but no one more than Ume's father, who had lost both of his precious sons in the rebellion at the innocent ages of 14 and 17. Ume and her mother tried their best, but they did not know her father's work, so the farm did not yield what it had to in order to meet the praefectus's demands. When Nigel returned to claim his tax, Ume's father offered her in its stead. To Ume and her mother's surprise, the Garlean accepted the offer without hesitation. Despite their tears, Ume's father dragged her mother away from her as the Roegadyn accompanying Nigel hit Ume hard enough to cause her to pass out. It was the second year of the Seventh Astral Era (2 7AE), and Ume was 11 years old the last time that she ever saw her mother Hazakura's face.
A Slave Girl to a Garlean Praefectus
Nigel fae Chaixius was a Garlean of little patience and less memory, and by the time he had returned to his home, he had forgotten the child's name that had been given to him. He thought that her eyes were the color of amber, and as a name it should suit her well enough. And she seemed either too shy or too sad to speak, so he declared that "Meek" would be her surname. It was a joke. It had been supposed to make her laugh. When it didn't, this made Nigel angry. Amber Meek lived with Nigel for nearly six months, and in that time she learned to predict and to carry out his desires before even he knew of them. It wasn't magic, but it was a skill she'd learned with her father...whose name she was already beginning to forget. For those six months, Amber called Nigel "master," and he called her whatever he pleased at that time. If it was a good day, she'd be "Amber" or "girl." On good days, Nigel would ask for little things, like for Amber to serve him his afternoon tea, for Amber to accompany him as he walks along the paths in his personal garden, and for Amber to give him a head behind the hedges."Quickly, now. So no one sees," he would command her, and she had been afraid not to comply. Things didn't always go her way even when she did, but more often than not, he noticed her less the less annoying and doting that she was.On worse days, Nigel was more inventive. Once, he named her "rim job" because he was very drunk, and this had made Amber laugh since she thought the idea of existing only to perform such a service before ceasing completely to exist seemed nice. That day, Nigel had been so angry that he had taken her virginity and then locked her in the broom closet underneath the stairs, leaving her there overnight. This was how she earned her terror of the dark, a phobia that torments her to the present day. When Amber was 12 years old, Praefectus Nigel fae Chaixius saw an opportunity to move up in the world by cozying up to the new Garlean ambassador in Kugane. He brought Amber with him and gifted her to the ambassador, claiming that she was a virgin from Doma. The ambassador accepted the gift and waited for the praefectus to leave before explaining to his personal assistant the contempt that he had for Nigel and his gift of Auri trash. After thoroughly humiliating Amber, the ambassador commanded his assistant to "get it out of my sight."The assistant chose to have Amber sold in the open black market, where she was picked up by Ly Duong, the hyurian owner of the Happy Happy Tomoe Pleasure House, who had long-term plans for the 12-year-old slave girl. Duong chose to keep the name that the girl had been registered under—"Amber Meek"—since she already answered to it well enough.
A "Happy Girl" at the Happy Happy Tomoe Pleasure House
Ly Duong put Amber to work as one of his "Happy Girls," whose job it was to create heavenly delights right from Kugane's very own Happy Happy Tomoe Pleasure House. The pleasure house was a dive frequented by the lowliest of scum and psychopaths wealthy enough to make any sin disappear. From ages 12 to 17, she served the men that patronized the Happy Happy Tomoe Pleasure House in whatever perverse way they desired, and she learned to thank them for the privilege of doing it.During Amber's tenure as a "Happy Girl," she was given very little in the way of an education. Because her allure was her youthful beauty and not her personality, her ability to seduce a client did not matter to Mr. Ly, nor did they matter to those soulless men that came to Mr. Ly and asked him for the privilege of spending some time with one of his Happy Little Girls.Nevertheless, her clients enjoyed few things more than the sound of their own voice, and this common trait of psychopaths and soulless men benefited Amber, who learned quickly from all the information that Amber's clients were willing to feed her regarding their secret deals, back-alley handshakes, hopes, and fears. Amber grew clever, though she would never dream to call herself such a thing.Despite seeming more comfortable with her nightly duties by around age 13, Amber remained a shy girl, prone to being delicate and sensitive. She was easy to please, easy to comfort, easy to hurt, and easy to fuck. For many of her clients, she was the perfect Happy Girl. But for one of them, sharing a Happy Girl was not enough. He had to have her for himself. His name was Captain Yulugi Ragalugi of the Red Makos, a brutal group of pirates that sailed under no flag, not even that of Limsa Lominsa. Infatuated with the 16-year-old girl on his first trip to Kugane in over a decade. The following year, he returned to Kugane and brought a fortune with him, and he used that fortune to purchase Amber Meek from the Happy Happy Tomoe Pleasure House. For the high price that Captain Ragalugi had chosen to buy Amber, Mr. Ly would have been a fool not to accept the sale. He did so happily and said goodbye to Amber without a second thought. And so, Amber lost the second man she'd come to see as her father as she was taken by cover of night from the Happy Happy Tomoe Pleasure House to the docks, where she would board the Red-White, the flagship of the Red Makos, and a fearsome vessel, by all accounts.
